Strategies to Overcome “Learned Helplessness”

Learned helpless is found when a student is unsure how to exert the power of communication through technology devices, particularly augmentative communication. As a teacher, it is important to encourage the learner to gain control over their environments, minimizing learned helplessness. One strategy for supporting an individual to overcome learned helplessness is to have the child communicate to his or her parents and daily report of school events. I particularly gravitate towards this technique because I believe it has the student take ownership in what he or she is communicating, as well as incorporating reflection and authentic daily experiences.
