Once a student’s IEP team decides that assistive technology
and augmentative communication will positively affect educational growth, it
must also be determined how the individual will learn to operate the device.
Within this learning process, opportunities must be given in daily situations
that will enforce the use of the specified AT. As well as being congruent with
the student’s goals and objectives, it is critical that the device will be
implemented in multiple environments, and authentic situations. Within the IEP,
the team must clearly state what augmentative communication services will be
enforced to utilize the device, as well as who carries the responsibility of
the device. Remember, when writing an IEP it’s important to be detailed and
precise!
