No Tech, Low Tech, and High Tech

Assistive technology is extremely beneficial to a wide range of learners. Varying in purpose, different types of assistive devices are available depending on the learners needs. Some systems are high functioning, while others are low technology based. This spectrum of devices is referred to as the assistive technology continuum. When choosing an operating system, it is important that it meets the needs of the student. The decision of a specific adaptation should be focused upon the individual’s strengths and weaknesses. By utilizing the assistive technology continuum, as well as addressing UDL goal setting guidelines, selection of a technology system needs to be evaluated intensely. After evaluation of the system is completed, it must be addressed how much the device will be utilized appropriately. It is vital to remember not one device fits all, but the right device has the potential to improve the goals of the student.
